Snap Showcases $2,195 Specs AR Glasses at Snapdragon Summit

Snap demonstrated its commercial augmented reality glasses, the Snap Specs, at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit on Wednesday, highlighting an untethered design powered entirely by onboard silicon.

    Key points

    • Snap showcased its $2,195 Specs augmented reality glasses during Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit.
    • The glasses house two Snapdragon processors directly within the frame, eliminating external compute pucks.
    • Unlike earlier iterations restricted to developers, the new hardware is available for direct consumer purchase.
    • The device relies on onboard hand-gesture recognition to navigate media playback and gaming applications.

First unveiled at the Augmented World Expo in June, the Snap Specs AR glasses retail for $2,195. Unlike previous hardware iterations that Snap restricted to software developers, the current model is available for direct public purchase, representing a shift toward consumer-facing hardware distribution.

    Onboard Compute and Frame Ergonomics

The glasses integrate two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors directly into the frame structure. Snap has not publicly disclosed the exact model numbers of the processors used in the device. This integrated architecture allows the hardware to function without an external processing unit or wired connection.

Many competing devices in the category, such as the upcoming XREAL Aura scheduled to launch this fall with Android XR, rely on a separate wired puck or mobile phone tether to handle computational tasks. Snap avoids this setup by mounting all processing units, sensors, and battery cells into the chassis of the eyewear itself.

Although the frames carry noticeable bulk to accommodate those components, the engineering balances the mass across the nose bridge and temple arms. The physical chassis grips the face closely, reducing slippage during head movements when compared to lighter smart frames such as Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses.

    Gesture Control and Standalone Features

The device operates using optical hand tracking, allowing users to interact with floating digital interfaces without physical remotes or paired handsets. The system supports interface navigation, multimedia streaming, and interactive gaming experiences through recognized hand gestures.

Demonstrations at the summit showed refined software tracking compared to earlier developer prototypes shown two years prior. Hand movements register quickly across the visual field, allowing users to select menu options and manipulate three-dimensional assets without guided instruction.

    Hardware Pricing and Market Viability

Despite the functional hardware advancements, the retail price remains a significant barrier for mainstream buyers. At $2,195, the hardware costs substantially more than standard wearable displays, positioning the product between specialized enterprise gear and premium personal electronics.

Much like reports where OnePlus 16 leaks detail unobtainable hardware tiers, the steep cost of the Specs could limit widespread adoption among regular shoppers. The high price reflects the component expenses of packing dual processors and display engines into a standalone frame, leaving questions about the size of the initial audience outside of dedicated enthusiasts.
