Google Wallet Tests New Vertical Card Layout on Android

Google has started testing a new vertical card layout for payment methods in Google Wallet on Android, moving away from the app’s traditional horizontal swipe carousel.

    Key points

    • Google is testing a vertically stacked card interface in Google Wallet on Android.
    • The layout replaces the traditional horizontal carousel with vertical scrolling for saved payment methods.
    • The design makes individual card artwork more visible and improves one-handed reachability.
    • The change appears in an expanded view that keeps passes, tickets, and transit cards accessible.
    • The interface is currently rolling out as a limited server-side test to select Android users.

The updated interface replaces side-to-side swiping with vertical scrolling, making it easier for people with multiple debit and credit cards to browse, select, and manage their payment methods. The change addresses a long-standing point of friction in the digital wallet, where navigating a large collection of cards required repetitive horizontal swipes across the top of the display.

Vertical Stacking Replaces the Horizontal Carousel

Since its launch, Google Wallet on Android has stored payment methods in a horizontal carousel placed near the upper portion of the home screen. While the active card appeared centered, adjacent cards were largely hidden off-screen, showing only a narrow edge. Users had to flick horizontally through each item to locate a specific card.

In the new design, cards sit arranged one below another in a vertical stack. Users can scroll downward through the list, exposing more of the card artwork and issuing bank details at a glance. The arrangement mirrors standard wallet conventions seen on competitor platforms such as iOS, though Google’s implementation leaves a larger portion of each card face exposed in the stack.

Improved Visibility and Reachability for One-Handed Use

Beyond speeding up card discovery, the vertical orientation improves usability on tall smartphone screens. In the existing layout, interacting with the horizontal carousel requires reaching toward the top half of the display, which can be awkward during one-handed transactions.

The vertically stacked list brings more card surface area into the lower half of the screen. Key practical benefits of the new arrangement include:

    • Faster browsing: A single downward flick reveals multiple saved payment methods at once.
    • Thumb reachability: Frequently used payment methods positioned lower in the stack are easier to tap with one hand.
    • Clearer identification: Expanded visibility for card art helps users distinguish between accounts issued by the same financial institution.
    • Maintained default settings: Users can still designate a default payment card for contactless tap-to-pay transactions.

Broader Overhaul Across the Google Wallet Interface

The card stack redesign functions as an expanded payment view rather than replacing the entire Google Wallet start page. Digital transit passes, event tickets, boarding passes, and loyalty cards remain organized below the primary payment section on the main screen.

This test follows earlier updates rolled out in late August and early September, when Google introduced full-screen, brand-colored passes for loyalty programs and transit cards. Those adjustments aimed to unify visual styling across diverse pass formats, and the current vertical card experiment aligns Google Wallet’s core payment interface with those broader aesthetic updates.

    Current Testing and Availability

The vertical layout is currently appearing as a limited server-side test for select Android users running recent versions of Google Wallet and Google Play services. Because Google is conducting an A/B test, installing the latest app update does not guarantee immediate access to the new layout.

Google has not published official release notes or announced a timeline for a general rollout. It remains unconfirmed whether the company plans to make the vertical stack permanent for all Android users or offer an option to switch back to the horizontal carousel.
