Disney’s “Project Gemini” is reportedly set to end the standalone Hulu application, consolidating its streaming content into Disney+ to streamline digital offerings.
This reported discontinuation of the Hulu app signifies Disney’s strategy to unify its streaming platforms, potentially impacting how millions of users access Hulu’s library of shows and movies. The integration aims to reduce redundancies and improve efficiency across services.
A new report, citing internal documents and employees, indicates Project Gemini is a multi-phased plan to bring Hulu’s content and features into Disney+. The goal is to “decommission” the Hulu app and its technology stack once users have transitioned. This unified experience is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. While Disney officially stated earlier that there were “no current plans to sunset the Hulu app,” internal documents suggest those plans are in motion. Some resources are being diverted from Hulu, with no major new features being added to the standalone app. The Hulu app has already ceased support on some platforms, including the Nintendo Switch in February 2026.
Disney has progressively integrated Hulu content into its flagship Disney+ service over the past year. This includes a dedicated “Hulu hub” within Disney+ for subscribers of the Disney Bundle. Users can now link their Hulu profiles to Disney+ to sync watch history and recommendations. Disney gained full operational control of Hulu in late 2023 after acquiring Comcast’s remaining stake for over $8.6 billion.
The transition aims to offer a richer, all-in-one library for subscribers without additional logins or switching costs. However, some questions remain regarding the future of Hulu + Live TV, which is not currently slated for full integration into Disney+.
